Dr Fredrik Petersson is a Senior Consultant and Associate Professsor at NCIS and Department of Pathology, NUH. He graduated from Lund University, Sweden in 1992 with M.D. and received his M.D. licence from the Swedish Board of Health in 1994. Thereafter, he trained in Histopathology at the Department of Pathology, Ryhov Hospital, Sweden and received his specialist qualification in Histopathology from the Swedish National Board of Health in 1999. In 2004, he received his Ph.D in pathology from Linköping University, Sweden. His PhD thesis ”Chronic gastritis in a sample of the general population: Helicobacter pylori infection, metaplastic transformation, epithelial proliferation, p53- and p21 expression and antral mucosal gastrin content with reference to gastric carcinoma development”, was awarded the Henrik Sjögren-medal.
Dr Petersson has broad research interests that include head and neck, gastrointestinal, genito-urinary and skin pathology. He has published more than 145 articles in peer-reviewed international journals, partly in collaboration with other local institutions / departments, and also with research institutions in Europe and the USA and is involved in several ongoing collaborative research projects with European and Scandinavian institutions. He is regularly invited as a speaker at international conferences and as expert panel member. Dr. Petersson is a member of the Editorial board of Head and Neck Pathology, the official journal of the North American Society of Head and Neck Pathology (NASHNP) and Advance in Modern Oncology Research. He is a member of NASHNP, as well as the International Society for Urologic Pathology (ISUP) and was in 2013 invited to become a member of the Arkadi M Rywlin (AMR) International Pathology Slide Seminar club and participates regularly as lecturer on their international meetings.
Prior to joining NUHS in 2009, Dr Petersson spent 3 years a senior consultant at the Department of Pathology, Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden. In 2008, he was a Clinical Observer and Researcher at the Department of Pathology, MD Anderson Cancer Center, University of Texas, Houston, USA. Thereafter, he spent half a year pursuing his research interests as Visiting Associate Professor at Sikl´s Department of Pathology, Charles University Hospital, Plzen, Czech Republic.
