NPC oneHeart Support Group

About Us

Established since 2008, NPC OneHeart is a voluntary support group formed to reach out to Nasopharyngeal (NPC) and Head and Neck cancer patients, survivors and caregivers. The group is open to everyone regardless of the hospitals they are from and all are welcome.

Our Mission

The NPC oneHeart aims to provide knowledge, psychological and emotional support to NPC and Head and Neck cancer patients and caregivers through organised activities, talks and sharing of experiences and practices. This group is also open to caregivers and patients with other types of cancers.

What We Have To Offer

  • To be part of a community of people with common interests and experiences of NPC or other types of cancer.
  • A community where survivors and patients can safely express their feelings, thoughts, fears and hope in a caring and non-judgemental environment.
  • A community where survivors and patients can learn more about side effects from health professionals through monthly talks.
  • A community where caregivers can feel appreciated and supported.

Activities & Programmes

  • Monthly talks on healthcare tips about treatment to post-recovery care, interaction and sharing sessions are alternately hosted at the NCIS and Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
  • The Befriender Programme introduces newly diagnosed NPC patients to cancer survivors, enabling real personal approach on coping strategies besides providing support and care.
  • Group activities are organised to create informal sharing sessions and to promote interaction between members.

Befrienders Programme

An NPC oneHeart Support Group Initiative

The Befrienders Programme is for newly diagnosed patients and their caregivers. It creates a supportive and encouraging environment for participants and their Befrienders to chat in private. With years of personal experience, our Befrienders provide support, care and advice on coping strategies to issues that you may face, during monthly one-to-one sessions.

The programme is staffed by members of the NPC oneHeart Support Group who have volunteered for this service.

To register your interest, contact 6772 8390 / 8370. You will be matched up with a volunteer cancer survivor or caregiver.

*Only for cancer patients and caregivers. Priority will be given for Nasopharyngeal Cancer (NPC) patients.

Stories of Hope

Read real-life stories of our cancer warriors and be inspired by their journey of courage, strength and faith!

Charles Wu, Diagnosed with Stage 4 Nasopharyngeal Cancer (NPC)

"Like most people, 65 years old (or as he would prefer, 65 years young) Charles Wu grew up expecting to lead a regular life – graduate from school, get a decent job, get married to the girl of his dreams and live happily ever after with his family. Well turns out, reality did not deviate too far from Charles’ expectations as he achieved these milestones in life. However, life often does surprise us with unexpected curveballs, which Charles experienced personally, and this is his story."

Sylvia Khoh, Diagnosed with Stage 1 Nasopharyngeal Cancer (NPC)

"It was during the Chinese New Year of 2010, and festivities were running high. Sylvia had scheduled a line-up of performances but to her dismay, found herself unwell in between performances to the point that she was no longer able to reach the high notes. This affected Sylvia greatly, as singing was her life’s passion. Suspecting nodules in her throat, she headed down to the ENT Department for a check. The check proved her suspicions right, as soft nodules were discovered in her throat. But to her relief, her vocal chords were not affected. Thinking that her worst fears were allayed, Sylvia was in for a rude shock as her Doctor discovered two grained sized cancerous lumps at the back of her nose and diagnosed her with Stage 1 Nasopharyngeal Cancer."

Yvonne Lee, Diagnosed with Stage 4 Nasophryngeal Cancer (NPC)

"The course of treatment was very trying, said Yvonne as she suffered from temporary hearing loss, blistered skin and an inability to swallow food and drinks. However, she found comfort in her loved ones who provided her with both emotional and physical support during this period. No longer having to fight her battles alone, Yvonne’s family and friends took turns to accompany her down for her treatment, a gesture she is truly appreciative of."
