Dr Ridzuan trained in the United Kingdom. During his training he received fellowships from the British Digestive Foundation and the British Journal of Surgery to extend his oncology training in Sweden, Belgium and Germany. He completed a 2 year research fellowship in pelvic floor disorders at the University of Edinburgh, funded by the Medical Research Council leading to the degree of a Masters in Surgery (MCh). Following this, he completed his training with colorectal fellowships at the University of Hull, UK and at the Mayo Clinic, Minnesota, USA.

Subsequent to his training, Dr Ridzuan was a colorectal surgeon at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in England between 1997 and 2013. During this time he examined for the Royal College of Surgeons in England and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Glasgow. In addition he was the editor for the e Learning for Health initiative in surgery, a member of the Patient Liaison Group at the Royal College of Surgeons and faculty member for the Training the Trainers course. Dr Ridzuan has published 77 papers, contributed nine surgical textbooks, undertaken seven invited reviews in surgical journals and has written one textbook.

Dr Ridzuan is also an external examiner at the Universiti Sains Malaysia and the Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons. He was recently awarded a postgraduate diploma in medical education and currently serves as the clinical lead for nutrition and patient safety in surgery.

His hobbies include spending time with his family, sailing, skiing, listening to classical music and watching rugby.
