Greetings from the Corporate Communications Team at the National University Cancer Institute, Singapore (NCIS)! As we look forward to usher in 2015 at the stroke of midnight, we just wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your support as well as fill you in on what we have planned for our NCIS Stories of Hope in the New Year.
In our daily field of work, we come across people from all walks of life who have been afflicted with the deadly disease which is cancer. With one in every three people falling prey to the disease, many of us would have probably personally encountered the disease or witnessed its' hold on family members, friends, or loved ones.
The fight against cancer is never easy; it is a test of mind, body and willpower that may stretch on for days, months, and even years on end and it doesn't just affect the victim, but their caregivers as well.
However, through it all, we've seen courageous cancer warriors emerge through battle, decked in armoury of positivity and hope that inspire others of victory too. In our pilot issues, we've met up with Mr Seow Tiang Keng, colorectal cancer survivor and Mr Dinesh Kumar, leukaemia survivor of six years. We heard their stories, got to know them on a more personal level as a Grandfather, Father, Husband and Son, and their stories touched us from within and ignited a spark of hope in us which is what led to the birth of our NCIS Stories of Hope, as we strongly believe that hope breeds hope, and these stories of strength and bravery will go on to ignite the spark of hope in others all around the world as well.
As quoted from Samuel Johnson, "The natural flights of the human mind are not from pleasure to pleasure, but from hope to hope" and come 2015, we look forward to bringing you even more inspirational real-life anecdotes of our cancer warriors. Look forward to monthly updates on our blog as well as take-home copies displayed across our clinics and wards over Levels 8-10 of the Yong Siew Yoon Wing at the NUH Medical Centre!
We would also like to take this opportunity to appeal for any cancer warriors reading this to step up and let your stories be heard. A little goes a long way, no one understands this journey like you do, and your voice will help to replace destitute and despondence with hopes and dreams of a better, healthier future. Keep the chain effect of hope going; contact us at ncis_comms@nuhs.edu.sg to share your story today.
To wrap up, we hope 2014 has been a great year for all of you and we hope 2015 will be an even better year. Cheers to a brand New Year and let's embrace it with our hearts full of happiness. From us to you, here's wishing you a bountiful year filled with love, joy, hope and most of all, health, for you and your loved ones. Enjoy the New Year festivities and keep your eyes peeled for a new story coming your way in March!
Love More, Hold on to Hope & Live Strong
